A Framework for Strengthening Adaptive Capacity
Deep Ecological Psychology is a framework for reclaiming and strengthening adaptive capacity
Adaptive capacity is understood as the ability to maintain contact, mobility and orientation in meeting life’s challenges
This page offers an overview of foundations, landmarks and maps that together shape this framework of Deep Ecological Psychology
Foundations
Evolution, deep ecology, and polyvagal theory form the foundation of deep ecological psychology.
The evolutionary perspective shows how the body, senses, and nervous system have developed through continuous interaction with landscape, light, climate, and relationships. Deep ecology highlights that humans are part of a larger living whole, where the self is inherently grounded in its surroundings. Polyvagal theory describes how the nervous system continuously registers safety and threat, organizing the body’s responses accordingly.
Together, these perspectives point to adaptive capacity as the ability to maintain contact, mobility, and orientation, and to move flexibly between internal states with the capacity to return to a regulated presence.
Landmarks
Core premises emerging from the theoretical foundation.
The landmarks provide direction for the work of strengthening the capacity to maintain contact, mobility, and orientation. Each landmark clarifies conditions that are essential for the development of such capacity, and together they form an operational point of departure.
Working within the landmarks means using contact, mobility, and orientation as the overarching criterion. When contact narrows and mobility is reduced, capacity weakens. When contact is maintained and mobility is strengthened, robustness increases.
Maps
The maps present the deep ecological psychological framework as lived experience.
Where the foundation describes the theoretical grounding and the landmarks provide direction, the maps show how adaptive capacity unfolds in response to life’s changing conditions. They make visible how contact emerges and narrows, how mobility enables flexibility, and how orientation sustains direction, intention, and values.
The maps provide a basis for recognizing what is happening in the moment and for identifying challenges along the way toward life mastery. They are designed to support the rediscovery of aliveness.
